by Susan Moore Teller: smt100@cox.net

Note: in 2018-November-author Susan Moore Teller published a 344 page book documenting Elizabeth "Eliza" Gayle, granddaughter of the Josiah Gayle who signed the Revolutionary Papers in July of 1775 and their family through various family lines back to Jamestown in 1607, and back through English Bluebloods to the "Royal Clans" in Europe going back to Charlemagne.

If you wish to order a copy of the book, "Eliza, a Blue Blooded Southern Belle Who Became a Pioneer Woman" that is autographed by the author, write sm0634@gmail.com (sm zero six three four) for information. It includes a biography of two Colonial Virginian Governors, Sir George Percy and Sir John West, whose names are found today on the Episcopalian Chapel in Jamestown, Virginia, both direct ancestors of Eliza.

Josiah Gayle Sr. signed the "Revolutionary Papers for the Public Defence" in South Carolina in 1775.  Three of his sons fought in the South Carolina Militia during the war.  Josiah Gayle Jr. was captured, jailed in Camden, drug out of the jail by Tory's and hung on the spot.  Caleb Gayle served with his brother Josiah in Singleton's Troups, Light Horse, S. Carolina.
Christopher was a Sgt. in the South Carolina Militia.

·         ASSOCIATION FOR PUBLIC DEFENCE, DISTRICT EAST OF WATEREE (RIVER) 1775
SOUTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION

The actual commencement of Hostilities against this continent, by the British Troops in the bloody scene on the 19th of April last, near Boston the Increase of arbitrary Impositions from a wicked and despotic Ministry and the dread (...word missing...) Insurrection in the Colonies, are causes sufficient to drive an oppressed People to the use of Arms. We therefore the Subscribers, Inhabitants of South Carolina, holding ourselfs bound by that most Sacred of all Obligations, the Duty of good Citizens toward an injured County, and thoroughly convinced, that, under our present distressed Circumstances, we shall be Justified before God and Man in resisting Force by Force; Do unite ourselves under every tie of Religion and the Honour and associate as a Band in her Defense, against every Foe. Hereby solemnly engaging that, whenever our Continental or Provincial Councils shall decree it necessary, we will go forth and be ready to sacrifice our Lives and Fortunes to secure her Freedom and Safety. This obligation to continue in full Force until a Reconciliation shall take place between Great Britain and America, upon constitutional Principles an Event which we most ardently desire. And we will hold all those persons inimical to the Liberty of the Colonies, who shall refuse to subscribe this Association.
